Charitable Fundraising Platforms: NEW Good Standing Requirements for Compliance
Do you work with California charities and/or process donations from California residents? Are you monitoring the compliance of EVERY charity on your platform through federal and state agencies at both signup AND at least monthly thereafter?
On January 1, 2023, sections of California’s Charitable Fundraising Platforms law (Gov. Code 125999) became operative. With it, charitable fundraising platforms are expected to verify that charities receiving donations through your platform are compliant with federal and state requirements and eligible to receive donations. California is the first, but likely not last, state to implement these rules for consumer protection.

NPVerified sources state compliance data from the State of California’s Franchise Tax Board and Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trusts and federal compliance data from the IRS Pub78 and Business Master File. Additional states and sources are also on the way.

NPVerified plans start at just 120/month for monitoring up to 100 organizations at a time. All plans include a user-friendly dashboard, the ability to self-manage monitoring lists, weekly screenings using updated compliance data, and alerts of status changes. API access and other options are also available upon request.

NPVerified requires Federal EIN’s for federal exempt status searches and State Entity ID’s for some state searches. The accuracy and ability to find records related to charities you are monitoring is directly influenced by the quality and quantity of information you can provide. For this reason, we highly recommend collecting and checking the accuracy of each charity’s EIN and State Entity ID from clients using our manual validation portal prior to adding them to your monitor list.
